Fixing Distortion, Clipping and Overshoots

What to do when the output sounds harsh or the true-peak monitor goes red.

Check the headroom panel

  • Look at Source Peak, Headroom and Applied Trim. Positive gain moves are the usual cause of overshoots.
  • Audientis applies an automatic measured trim to keep output at or below -1.0 dBTP — if the monitor is red, your source itself is already clipped.

Fix the source

  • Re-bounce the mix without a master limiter and with at least 1 dB of headroom.
  • Prefer cutting the masking element over boosting the quiet one — the Action Plan already recommends this order.

Rule out playback

  • Set your system output below maximum; some interfaces distort in their own output stage, not in Audientis.
